Establishing plans for Drosophila embryo organization or limb bud development in mice are well-known models. In these models, so-called "positional" information plays a major role: a substance present in the form of a concentration gradient in the extracellular medium will or will not trigger intracellular signals, depending on the dose to which the cells along this gradient are exposed.
